Protons, electrons and neutron

Lets examine the building blocks of atoms in greater detail!

Just like how most of the food we eat are composed of Carbohydrates, fats and proteins,

atoms are made of Protons, Electrons & Neutrons.

Just as we thought atoms were small enough, it turns out that they are made of even smaller substances, and this is the way nature works!

As we zoom in to see things in greater detail, we find that objects are made up of small atoms which are in turn made up of sub-atomic particles which are in turn made up of…

Point to note: zoom into atoms, and we find that they are made up of subatomic particles

Remember that the number of subatomic particles in an atom differentiates it from another atom of another element?

the key thing about subatomic particles is that the protons and electrons have CHARGE.

Protons have positive charge, while electrons have negative charge.

The attraction between the positively charged protons and negatively charged electrons hold the entire atom together, because the electrons are tightly tightly attracted to the protons, just like…

how gravity from the sun and planets attract each other tightly.

Point to take note: Atom is held together by electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged protons and electrons

Electric charges are very very very influential in Chemistry reactions and explaining how atoms interact with each other.

Chemical bond between atoms is due to positive charges attracting negative charges

Take note of the arrangements of the protons, neutrons (these guys are uncharged but still important in making up atomic mass) and electrons!

The protons and neutrons (both have mass number of 1) that comprises most of an atom’s mass reside in the centre or nucleus of the atom:

Protons and neutrons are very massive compared to electrons

Most of the atomic mass is in the nucleus contained in protons & neutrons

The electrons which are very light, and move very fast, are arranged in shells around the nucleus!

Electron arrangement in shells!

Outcome: nucleus consists of protons and neutrons which largely make up atomic mass, electrons are light, fast, and arranged in shells.
